Bat Weight and Pick-up Guide

At cricket-box we appreciate the importance of how a bat feels in the hands, therefore we indicate if a bat is light, medium or heavy. This is based on the pick-up and feel of the bat and not totally reliable on the dead weight of the bat. As a very basic guide a light bat may weigh between 2lb 6 oz to 2lb 9oz, a medium bat between 2lb 9oz and 2lb 12oz and a heavy bat over 2lb 12oz, however a skilled bat maker, with careful consideration to balance can make even say a 2lb 12oz bat with a light pick-up

Junior Bat Weights

Junior Bat Weights

The above table shows the approximate weights of junior bats (in lb's & oz's), this can depend on whether the bat is English or Kashmir Willow. Kashmir Willow bats tend to be heavier.

Bat Size Guide

Bat Size Guide

Cricketers and all top coaches agree with suppliers and manufacturers that choosing the correct size bat is vital for the proper technical development of young cricketers. It is important that the bat is not too long and more importantly not too heavy to hinder correct stroke play and good technique. Junior bats are scaled down in size and weight to meet this important requirement. However, the above table is only a general guide and the most important factor is that the bat must be comfortable in the hands of the batsman, young or old, because each batter will have their own individual needs.

Ball Sizes/Weights

Senior balls wiegh 5 1/2 oz, ladies balls 5oz and junior balls 4 3/4oz. Junior balls are generally used up to under 13 level of junior cricket.

Umesh Valjee, right, who led England Deaf to a draw in 2008, is in charge again for January's tour Down Under

The ECB today named the England Deaf squad for the forthcoming tour of Australia in January 2011.

The squad will play one Test match during the Ashes series for deaf cricketers, followed by two one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals as part of a tri-series against Australia and South Africa in Geelong.

England will be looking to win back the trophy currently held by Australia after their last encounter in 2008 ended in a draw.

The Ashes series for deaf cricketers dates back to the early 1990s, which signalled the start of the May/Craven Trophy for the winners and was the fore-runner to the first Deaf World Cup in 1996.

George Greenway, James Schofield and Michael Weathersby are all new to the squad and will be making their first trip Down Under, hoping to show captain Umesh Valjee what they are capable of.

ECB national disability cricket manager Ian Martin said: “Everyone involved in deaf cricket in England is looking forward to the forthcoming series and the challenge that playing against Australia in Australia brings.

“The last Ashes series for deaf cricketers was very close and we are looking forward to a well fought contest. We are also looking forward to the tri-series involving South Africa, whom we have not faced for a few years.

“We have some new faces in the squad and a new, but experienced coaching team with the opportunity to bring two titles home. The squad are well prepared and ready for the challenges that lie ahead.”
